The National Heritage Administration announced that Korea's application for the "Jang Fermentation Culture" has received a "recommendation for inscription" from UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage Evaluation Body.

Typically, heritage recommended for inscription is officially added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity unless there are exceptional circumstances. Thus, it is expected that the listing will be confirmed at the 19th session of the Intangible Heritage Committee, scheduled for December 2–7 in Asunción, Paraguay.

With this addition, Korea’s total number of entries on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity will reach 23.

"Jang" refers to fermented seasonings such as doenjang, ganjang, and gochujang, which form the foundation of Korean cuisine. The "jang fermentation culture" encompasses the entire process from ingredient preparation to production.

The Evaluation Body recognized that "jang, alongside rice and kimchi, is central to the Korean dining table, reflecting family identity and strengthening familial bonds. Moreover, the tradition of jang-making has given rise to a variety of related cultural practices."
