[🇺🇸] South Korea Braces for Heaviest Snow of Winter as -40°C Arctic Blast Hits

A powerful arctic blast with temperatures around -40°C aloft is passing over the Korean Peninsula, bringing the heaviest snowfall of the winter season.

 According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, snow will begin late Friday, January 9, and expand nationwide by Saturday. Up to 15cm of snow is forecast for inland Gangwon and Jeolla provinces, while the Seoul metropolitan area could see up to 8cm.

The heavy snow is caused by arctic air interacting with the relatively warm surface of the West Sea, leading to the rapid development of snow clouds.

Intense snowfall is expected during the daytime on Saturday, potentially accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong gusts.

Since the snow is expected to accumulate quickly within a short period, significant regional variations in snow depth are anticipated.

Once the snow subsides, a severe cold wave will return starting January 11.

While Saturday's morning temperatures will range from -2°C to 8°C, they are projected to plummet to between -15°C and -2°C on Sunday as a continental high-pressure system expands. Interior regions are expected to experience a deep freeze around -10°C, making for a bitterly cold start to the week.
