"Which shipping method should I choose?"

When importing Korean products, choosing the shipping method is just as important as choosing the products themselves.

Even for the same products, the arrival time, total cost, and customs procedures can vary significantly depending on how they are shipped.

"I've heard air freight is fast, but how much cheaper is sea freight?"

"What's the difference between international express and air cargo?"

These are questions we often receive from overseas buyers. There is no single answer: it depends on the volume and weight of the cargo, the delivery deadline, and the budget.

In this article, we summarize the differences between the main shipping methods and which one suits each situation.

Four Shipping Methods You Should Know

Shipping methods can be broadly divided by mode of transport (air or sea) and type of service (international express or general cargo). The following four are commonly used in practice.

Shipping method

Overview

International express (courier)

An international courier company handles everything door to door, from pickup to delivery. Mainly used for documents, samples, and small shipments.

Air cargo

Goods are carried in the cargo hold of an aircraft. Transport is generally airport to airport, and customs clearance and local delivery are often arranged separately.

Sea LCL (less than container load)

Multiple shippers share one container. Used when there isn’t enough cargo to fill a container.

Sea FCL (full container load)

A single shipper uses an entire container. Suitable for large shipments.

In addition, international mail handled by Korea Post, such as EMS, is another option for small shipments. Specific services and conditions vary by carrier and destination, so please check them before shipping.

Air vs. Sea: What’s the Difference?

The biggest differences are speed and cost.

In general, air shipping is fast but expensive, while sea shipping takes longer but becomes more cost-effective as volume increases.

Sea

Speed

Fast

Slow (varies greatly by destination and route)

Cost

Relatively high

Cost per unit decreases as volume increases

Suitable cargo

Small-volume, high-value, or urgent cargo

Large-volume, heavy, or bulky cargo

Points to note

Costs can rise sharply for bulky cargo

Schedules may change due to port waiting times or transshipment

Actual transit times and rates vary greatly depending on the origin and destination, the season, and the carrier, so the most accurate way to compare is to get a quote for each shipment.

International Express vs. General Cargo: What’s the Difference?

Even within air transport, international express and general cargo differ in the scope of service.

The biggest advantage of international express is convenience.

The courier company often handles everything from pickup and transport to delivery at the destination, and tracking is easy. However, costs tend to rise sharply as weight increases, so it is best suited to documents, samples, and small shipments.

General cargo becomes more advantageous as volume increases.

Once the volume exceeds a certain level, air cargo and sea freight are often cheaper per unit than international express. On the other hand, customs clearance and final delivery in the importing country are usually arranged by the importer, either directly or through another provider.

Generally airport to airport or port to port

Import customs clearance

Often handled by the courier company

Often handled by the importer through a customs broker or freight forwarder

Medium to large

The scope of service and customs handling vary depending on the carrier and contract terms, so please confirm what is included before shipping.

状況別の選び方ガイド

Choosing by Situation

In the end, the best method depends on how urgent the shipment is and how much you are shipping. The following is a general guide. In practice, we recommend also considering the characteristics of your cargo and actual quotes.

Situation

Suitable shipping method

You need samples or documents quickly

International express or EMS

Small orders for test sales

EMS (international mail) or international express

Fairly large volume with a tight deadline

Air cargo

Large volume with a flexible deadline

Sea LCL

Enough cargo to fill a container

Sea FCL

Heavy or bulky cargo

Sea (compare with air cargo if the deadline is tight)

If your volume falls between two options, such as international express vs. air cargo or LCL vs. FCL, we recommend getting quotes for both and comparing them. Surprisingly, the faster option can sometimes be cheaper.

What Affects Shipping Costs: Actual Weight vs. Volumetric Weight

Volumetric weight is often overlooked when estimating shipping costs. Carriers generally calculate charges based on whichever is greater: the actual weight of the cargo or its volume converted into weight (volumetric weight). This is why light but bulky cargo can cost more to ship than expected.

The formula for volumetric weight varies by shipping method. The following standards are widely used in the industry:

Shipping method

Volumetric weight (common standard)

International express

Length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5,000

Air cargo

Length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6,000

Sea LCL

1 CBM (1 m³) is treated as approximately 1,000 kg, and the greater of weight or volume is applied

For example, suppose a box measures 50 cm long, 40 cm wide, and 30 cm high (about 19.7 × 15.7 × 11.8 in) and actually weighs 5 kg (about 11 lb).

  • Volumetric weight (international express standard): 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5,000 = 12 kg (about 26.5 lb)

  • Volumetric weight (air cargo standard): 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 6,000 = 10 kg (about 22 lb)

So even though the box actually weighs 5 kg, it may be charged as 12 kg if sent by international express. This is why simply making the packaging smaller can change the shipping cost.

Calculation standards and rounding methods may differ by carrier and service, so when comparing quotes, also check which standard is being applied.

In addition to the freight charge, fuel surcharges, documentation fees, and local customs clearance fees may also be added.

Things to Check Before Choosing a Shipping Method

Some items are restricted.

Products with built-in batteries, liquids and sprays, and certain chemical products may be restricted or require additional procedures depending on the shipping method. Restrictions are especially strict for air transport, so it is a good idea to check at the product selection stage.

Check the duty and customs rules of the importing country.

Duty-free thresholds for low-value shipments and simplified customs procedures vary by country, and shipments above these thresholds may require standard import procedures. Even for the same goods, the customs procedure may change depending on the shipping method and the purpose of import (for sale or personal use).

Agree in advance on who pays which costs.

Clarifying before the transaction who will pay the freight, insurance, and the duties, taxes, and customs clearance fees incurred in the importing country helps you avoid unexpected costs after arrival.

Consider cargo insurance.

Damage or loss can occur during international transport. For high-value products or large shipments, it is worth considering cargo insurance as well.

Duties, customs procedures, and restricted items vary by country and product, so we recommend confirming the details with a customs broker or other professional.

Conclusion: Balancing Speed and Cost

There is no single right shipping method.

What matters most is choosing based on the volume and weight of your cargo, your deadline, and your budget. For example, international express may suit urgent samples, while sea freight may suit large shipments with a flexible deadline.
