The Korean Peninsula is currently experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, as both the North Pacific High and the Tibetan High dominate the region. With the year's hottest period—late July to early August—approaching, some forecast this could become one of the worst heatwaves on record.

Temperatures have exceeded 40°C in cities like Gwangmyeong and Paju, and Seoul recorded 37.1°C, setting a new high for early July. The unusually early end to the monsoon season has contributed to rapid surface heating, further intensifying the heatwave.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, hot and humid air is expected to continue flowing in, prolonging the extreme heat and tropical nights. Most regions are expected to see daytime highs above 35°C this weekend.

Officials are urging the public to avoid going out during peak heat and to be cautious with food handling to prevent heat-related illnesses and food poisoning.
