This weekend, the Korean Peninsula is expected to experience a heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 38°C across the region.

Heatwave

Following the recent monster heavy rains, intense heat and tropical nights have settled in, and heatwave warnings are currently issued for most areas nationwide. The simultaneous influence of the North Pacific High and Tibetan High is driving the temperature rise.

Daytime highs are forecast at 31–37°C on the 25th, 32–38°C on the 26th, and 31–37°C on the 27th.

Clear skies are expected nationwide through the weekend, though rain is forecast for Jeju Island on the 26th. Additionally, strong winds and high waves are predicted around Jeju from the night of the 24th through the 29th, which may disrupt flights and ferry services.

This year’s extreme heat began rapidly from early July, with the number of hot days and tropical nights expected to exceed usual levels. A KMA official said, “Late July to early August is typically the hottest period, but this year’s heatwave started early and is likely to last longer than usual.”
