🌿 The Hidden Gem of Korea: Jusanji Pond in Cheongsong

In the quiet mountains of Cheongsong County, Gyeongsangbuk-do, lies a place that feels like a dream. At dawn, mist rises over the water, wrapping ancient trees that stretch skyward from beneath the pond. This magical scene became famous worldwide through director Kim Ki-duk’s film Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.

Surprisingly, Jusanji Pond isn’t natural — it’s an artificial reservoir built in 1721 during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. For over 300 years, it has never once dried up.

🌋 Born from Fire: The Volcanic Secret Beneath

Jusanji’s endless water comes from the land itself. The area is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Cheongsong, shaped by volcanic eruptions 70 million years ago.The ground is made of welded tuff, a porous volcanic rock that absorbs rainwater and releases it slowly, keeping the pond’s water level stable all year.

🌳 The 300-Year-Old Willows That Live in Water

The pond’s most striking feature is the cluster of giant willows (Salix chaenomeloides) growing directly in the water. While most trees would rot, these have survived for centuries — a miracle made possible by the steady water conditions. They stand like silent guardians of time.
