For the first time since its founding, Starbucks is introducing an unmanned ordering system, or kiosk, to its stores in Korea and Japan.

In Korea, the pilot program begins this month in select locations, starting with two stores in Myeongdong—an area known for heavy foot traffic and international tourists—and some stores in Jeju. Japan will also begin installing kiosks around the same time.

This marks a strategic shift to enhance store efficiency by supplementing the traditional face-to-face ordering system.

Starbucks had previously delayed adopting kiosks out of respect for its philosophy of human-centered communication. However, to ease congestion during peak hours, it is now expanding digital transitions—from vibration pagers (already in use at over 150 stores) to kiosks.
