CGV held a press conference to introduce its newly enhanced SCREENX theater at the Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Unlike the traditional SCREENX theaters, which feature screens on the front and both sides, the new theater expands the screen to include the ceiling, creating a four-sided immersive viewing experience.
This is the first time in the world that a four-sided screen has been implemented in a large cinema.
The four-sided SCREENX theater, which officially opens on January 24th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall, accommodates a total of 200 seats, including two private boxes on the second floor, each with seating for four people. Ticket prices are set at 22,000 won (approximately 2,400 yen or $18 USD) for general movies on weekends, the same as an IMAX screening.
The theater also features cutting-edge technologies such as "Dolby Atmos," which delivers immersive three-dimensional sound using 54 speakers, and recliner-style seats that allow for a wide viewing angle. A representative from CJ 4DPLEX Studio emphasized, “The four-sided SCREENX theater strengthens all three core elements of the moviegoing experience: Screen, Sound, and Seat (3S).”
However, some concerns were raised about the image quality, as the three additional screens are reportedly about half the resolution of the main front screen. In response, CGV stated, “We plan to carry out renovations in the second half of this year, including the introduction of new projector equipment, which will ensure uniform image quality across all four screens.”
Since its debut in 2013, SCREENX has been installed in 30 locations nationwide, including the Yongsan I'Park Mall.
