Hapdeokje in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea—a historical irrigation site and one of the three great embankments of the Joseon Dynasty—is gaining attention as a willow-lined healing destination.

According to the city of Dangjin, since the Hapdeokje restoration plan was established in 2007, over 1,000 willow trees have been planted from 2012 to last year, including 170 royal willows, 740 weeping willows, and 90 drooping willows. As a result, Korea’s longest 2.5km willow path was created.

Gong Young-sik, head of the Culture and Sports Department, stated, “Willows are among the best trees for carbon absorption,” and encouraged visitors to “feel the sound of wind rustling through the trees along the scenic waterside at Hapdeokje.”

Hapdeokje is a year-round eco-healing destination: cherry blossoms, willows, and rapeseed flowers bloom in spring; lotus flowers flourish in summer; and migratory swans, designated as a natural monument, can be seen in winter.

Dangjin City also plans to host a lotus festival around Hapdeokje from July 27 to 29.
