[🇺🇸] MONSTA X & SHINee Were the Real-Life Models for SAjA Boys in ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’

The real-life inspirations behind the SAjA Boys characters in Netflix’s popular animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters have been revealed.

On July 29, Korea Economic Daily published an interview with designer Professor Wi Hyun-song of ChungKang College and animator Min Hong, who worked on the animation team for a year.

Animator Min Hong explained that to bring the SAjA Boys’ dance moves to life, the team studied K-pop choreography videos from MONSTA X and SHINee. He added that for the facial expressions of the group’s leader Jinwoo, they drew heavy inspiration from EXO’s Kai.

Director Maggie Kang had previously told Forbes that the film drew inspiration from various K-pop groups including BTS, TXT, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, BIGBANG, and MONSTA X. The character Jinwoo was also said to be inspired by ASTRO’s Cha Eun-woo and actor Nam Joo-hyuk.

K-Pop Demon Hunters tells the story of Huntress K-pop stars Lumi, Mi-ra, and Joy, who fight demons behind their glamorous stage personas. Since its release on June 20, the film has surpassed 100 million views in just 5 weeks and has become Netflix’s most-watched animated movie.
