Conductor Myung-Whun Chung (72) has been named the next Music Director of Italy’s famed La Scala Opera House, becoming the first Asian to hold the position in its 247-year history.

Myung-Whun Chung

Chung will officially begin his tenure in 2027. La Scala, along with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London, is one of the world's top three opera houses and has hosted legendary maestros such as Arturo Toscanini and Riccardo Muti.

Currently, Chung serves as the Music Director of the Busan Concert Hall and Busan Opera House, and is Honorary Conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra. His previous roles include Music Director of the Paris Opera, Principal Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic, and Principal Conductor of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome.

His appointment comes after surpassing leading candidate Daniele Gatti of Italy, and British critic Norman Lebrecht described the decision as “shocking.”
