A warning has been issued that using public USB charging ports at airports, subways, and other public places may lead to personal information theft.

Public USB Charging Ports

The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) recently warned that the hacking method known as "juice jacking" has been spreading via USB ports, urging users to be cautious.

Juice jacking is a method where hackers directly infiltrate a device’s internal information via a USB port. This can result in theft of sensitive data such as contacts, photos, and financial app information, or lead to ransomware infections. Experts advise that the safest option when using USB ports in public places is to turn off the device’s power completely, but they emphasize that taking preventive measures is more important.

KISA has recommended safety guidelines such as maintaining the latest updates for operating systems, carrying portable batteries, using charging-only cables or adapters, and only using encrypted Wi-Fi. The TSA and FBI in the United States also recommend using personal chargers instead of public ports, making it crucial to exercise extra caution when traveling abroad.
